Many cities are grappling with solid waste that has reached epic proportions. With little or no space to dispose of waste, several large cities are forced to ship waste to other areas of the country—but this approach is not a long-term or efficient solution. Smart technology applications can be harnessed to help cities reduce and improve solid waste disposal, such as digital tracking and payment for waste—which can encourage companies and households to increase recycling and composting—or optimizing waste collection routes. Technology solutions for waste management have been relatively unexplored but are essential to address the national and global challenge of waste reduction.
